a secret to a good relationship

i am presuming mostly ladies view this
good ol' blog of mine.
it appears that way.
i figured out a secret to a good relationship
this weekend.
it's really simple.
but it breaks some girl code.
before i let you in on this secret,
i must tell you what you already may know.
men and women are ridiculously different.
they act differently.
and more importantly,
they think differently.
men can't read your minds.
most of them can't even read your silly hints.
and i just barely figured this out!

if you want your husband to know what you mean,
tell him.
it's that simple.

a conversation between us:
me (wanting to go to zupas): where do you want to eat?
mr. schroeder (not caring where we go): i don't care--you choose.
me (caring): i don't care either. you choose. no battle.
mr. schroeder: k. why don't we go to olive garden?

in my head, i am disappointed that he didn't magically
choose zupas for our place to eat out.
are you kidding me?
how else would he know i wanted to go there?
maybe if i would have said,
"i want to go to zupas."
i wouldn't have faced disappointment.
that's the secret, folks.
tell your husband what you want.
tell your husband what you think.
and if you are like me,
you can save yourself from that massive let-down moment.

i think we are cute.

  2. SO true. I have the hardest time with this! It's absolutely ridiculous to always assume someone else can read your mind - but I keep doing it anyway. And you guys ARE cute :)

  3. I know how you feel. I realized this a few months ago. James and I talk about how to improve this. He reads my face and knows if I say 'i don't know' with a certain look, it's something I care about. I know he is not a mind reader and we work hard on getting me to TALK about what I am thinking and feeling. It's something everyone needs to remember.

    Thanks for sharing,

  4. We have the "What do you want for dinner?" or "What do you want to do tonight?" conversation all the time! I always tell my husband to give me three choices.

  8. You guys ARE cute. :) Haha, I just recently discovered this secret for myself! Things go so much better when I don't expect my husband to magically know what I want all the time. Crazy thing-I tell him what I want and he does it for me instead of me wishing he will suddenly realize what I am expecting. Win! :) Loved this post!

  9. Oh my gosh. This is SO true. I try to get Eric to read my mind all the time, and for some reason it just doesn't happen. Lame.

PS: I'm with everybody. You guys are totally cute. Love that picture!

  10. You hit the nail on the head! it is so true, it all boils down to communication :) ( wich does not involve mind reading )

  11. Sorry if you get this comment twice.. You guys are the cutest! And..you win the award for being able to write a blog comment that brings me to tears. Thank you, thank you it is everything I needed to hear plus some. I can just picture you pushing me a wheel chair dodging all the crazies, it would be even funnier if we still hadn't met. I look forward to sampling your banana bread soon!

  17. This is so so so true! This is one of the gems of advice my mother gave me. We have to be direct with men - we think we're simple but really, they are simple! (And we're pretty dang complex... for no good reason!)
