the givers & the takers.

ever since i laid eyes on this quote in high school, it will always be one of my favorites:

i am blessed. super blessed. i remember growing up, my parents were always so fond of serving other people. it seemed like every thanksgiving, we would do something for the poor. & every christmas, we would do something who might need a little cheering up. they were always so giving. & i think that's where i learned to absolutely love service. i'm sure i have told the story of me doing community service with the city. that all started in high school. i dedicated about 4,000 hours my high school career serving with the city. and i loved every minute of it. currently, i am still involved in it.

a few weeks ago, i had the opportunity to meet one of mr. schroeder's very best friends he grew up with. he kept saying, "i need to find me a wife. can you guys help me?" as we were talking about dating & getting hitched, mr. schroeder said,

"dude. you need to find a wife that gives to others. amanda is always making bread for the neighbors, and coming home with stuff for other people instead of for her."

my heart sank a little bit. or a lotta bit, probably. & i was so humbled at the fact that he had just said that. i haven't ever really noticed what i do for other people...if that makes any sense? i just love helping people out. if you're sick, let me bring you a jamba. did you just lose a loved one? i'll make ya some meals to bring over. i don't know. it's just something that i absolutely love doing. no matter what, i will always believe that you can never serve people enough. if i was able, i would probably go to the temple every single day. i would work for free. unfortunately, that isn't realistic.

i was very impressed when i read a few articles mentioning all the heroes in the boston marathon bombing. the world definitely has some good in it. i believe that. but i will always believe the world could use a little more service. don't you think?

speaking of service, i am starting a project in the next few weeks that i am so excited to write about. you readers of mine, just wait. it's gonna be good.

  4. I admire this trait in people! My mom is one of those givers, who never takes anything for herself! I on the other hand am more of a taker I think, and it's just my natural thought process, so it's hard for me to remember to be a giver a lot of times! :P

  10. I love your love of service! Especially since you made banana bread for a stranger who was laid up and you offered to push them in a wheel hair around temple square so they could see the Christmas lights. You're pretty stellar, and I want to be just like you when I grow up! On a different note, I should be done with finals by Wednesday at the latest, woot woot party!!!

  11. You are a sweet girl! Helping people feels so good. I need to remember it's not always about me and that I will always be happier caring more about others than myself!

  12. Having a servant's heart is what Christ showed us...rock on sister for striving to live that! As I have read stories from Boston and Texas, I'm amazed and humbled too by the example and witness of many who were there...
