My Favorite Scripture

I got a couple of emails asking me what my favorite scripture was and why. I thought this was interesting. Usually, I'll get somewhat difficult questions to answer, but strive to answer all of them in the best possible way I can. People are silly. People are complicated. It's always a complicated process to try and explain to someone who has absolutely no faith in God whatsoever. Because most of my life, I have been taught to know off of faith. The fact that people have asked this question, makes me happy to know that there are people out there who are simple and innocently curious.

Q: What is your favorite scripture from the Book of Mormon and why? I’m not LDS but am interested in this answer. -Jess

I have two favorite scriptures. Both for many reasons.

Alma 5:27
“Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?”

I love love love the scripture above because it’s plain and simple. It’s basically stating, “Hey! If you died right this instant, would you be clean? Have you remained sufficiently humble?” Whenever I’m stumbled, or even when I’m doing pretty good, I always strive to remember this scripture because I always need to be improving and going forward, not going backward and screwing up.

My second favorite scripture is 2 Nephi 2:11
“For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one: wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.”

I adore this scripture. A lot. Especially in the world today. If you go to any news channel, you will see crazy things with either members bashing the LDS church, or people protesting about the LDS church. Here, is the scripture coming to pass right before our eyes. There MUST be opposition in all things. If there wasn’t opposition, there wouldn’t be good or bad. There wouldn’t be corruption or incorruption. It’s simple. You see the craziness going on in the world, and it’s only going to get worse…WHY? Because our Father in Heaven has trusted us to come to the earth at this time to fight off the opposition and stand for truth and righteousness.

Jess, Thank you for asking that. Thank you very very much. Do YOU have any questions about the LDS church? Email me at we(n)serendipity(at)gmail.com and your question could be anonymously or publicly answered on future Mormon Monday posts!
